about

When I was commissioned by the Shevchenko Scientific Society and the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences to write a work in honor of Ukrainian poet Taras Schevchenko’s 200th anniversary, I also used it to pay homage to the 2014 Ukrainian “Maidan Revolution.” The resulting cello quartet had four movements, and this is a live recording from the 2016 premiere performance.

When I wrote the piece, I never imagined that the revolution I was paying tribute to was just a prelude to the horrors that we’re all witnessing today.

Now I’m thinking of all my friends and family in Ukraine, and all the innocent people who’s lives have been devastated by war. But I also know that Ukraine is strong, that they will win, and that today is one day closer to victory. They continue to inspire my music.
